Stress awarEness day

Stress is something we all deal with, but how much time does our society put in actually teaching us coping skills to set us up for success?

The answer is little to none.

We spend years in school, it seems impossible that we wouldn’t be taught these necessary life skills.

When our hearts and thoughts are racing, where are we to turn?

I can’t help but think of the irony of writing this on Dia de Los Muertes, where we honor our loved ones and the lessons they’ve left behind.

Yoga and mindfulness are a part of these practices.

With a root in holistic practices, yoga has been around for thousands of years to tell us the story of how the mind and body are one.

When one is off balance, so the other will become.

When we work to balance out one, so too, the other is likely to follow.

Within ancient yoga philosophy, one might say they are working to balance out their guna state, where in today's society one might talk about balancing the nervous system.

Modern science is only now starting to understand what yoga has known for thousands of years.

And we can use these ancient practices to heal.

Some might be:

-Breathwork: pursed lip, box breath, extended exhale

-Meditation: mindfulness, compassion, body scan

-Pratyahara: sensory control, listing senses we are experiencing= 5 sights, 4 things we can touch, 3 things we can hear, 2 we can smell, and 1 we can taste

-Movements or stretches we can use to relieve bodily tension, circulate blood flow

-Mudras, or hand gestures & movements

-Kundalini kriyas, or cleanses

-Pratipaksha bhavana: cultivating the opposite, affirmation

-Saucha- purifying, taking care of our bodies: eating clean, showering, face wash, dental hygiene, cleanliness

-Mentorship: book a therapist, a coach, a healer
